Why is Winter Weather hard on the skin?

It's that time of year again! The weather is starting to cool down, the holidays are around the corner, and your skin is starting to dry out and flake.

Winter weather is not fun for the skin. Cold weather and low humidity levels result in dry air, which then steals moisture away from the skin. Moving from the cold air outside into a warm, heated house is almost worse. This leaves the skin dry, tight, and uncomfortable.

So why does the cooler weather upset your skin? Cold temperatures partly solidify lipids (fats) in our skin, and the low humidity levels extract moisture from the top layers of our skin, leaving it dry and damaged.

The skins natural exfoliation process slows as the enzymes that usually eat up the dead skin, cannot work effectively in our vulnerable dry skin. As the dead skin builds up, the skin is left rough, sensitive, and more acne prone than usual.

How can we help our skin as the weather changes?

  1. 1. I recommend using enzyme masks and oils that contain fruit acids that act in the same way our own enzymes do.

  2. 2. It's extremely important to slush away all those dead skin cells by gently exfoliating the skin (I recommend using a SpaCells Facial Sponge)

  3. 3. Lastly, bump up the moisture in the skin with a cream based cleanser and serums before bed.
