In 1851, Kunjali Rama's company, K. Rama & Co., won the contract to transport a large consignment of salt by sea to London. The firm's boat, the Dunhinde, was fitted out as a troop ship, the "Samudeer". Samudeer has two decks and four masts, and is of unusual construction, and comfortable for one hundred officers and men. The troops were on their way to the Second Anglo-Sikh War to fight alongside the British. Later, they saw action in the First Anglo-Burmese War and First Anglo-Afghan War. From the ports of Bombay and Cape Town, Samudeer, under the command of Captain J. R. Mashburn, set sail for Suez on 1 January 1853. Marakkar was second officer on the Samudeer. On their journey, the Samudeer sailed through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea to Aden. There, Samudeer received a terrible shock. On 4 January, the Samudeer was attacked by pirates and the company lost the ship. The company received compensation from the Government of Siam. When the Samudeer was repaired, Captain Mashburn chartered it to the Royal Navy to transport marines and officers for India and Africa. Samudeer was subsequently transferred to the East India Company's Indian Marine and, in 1857, Marakkar was on Samudeer, when it was engaged at Sultrenga.
